The Group has a low risk Product Discovery model. This is based upon identifying new uses for existing drugs and drug templates - referred to as Drug Reprofiling. Within the Sosei's Drug Reprofiling Platform® (DRP®), two types of opportunity are considered - new uses for marketed drugs and marketed drug templates and - new uses for drugs that have stalled in development. New uses for marketed drugs and drug templates Conceptual biology is used to identify new indications for established drugs, and to identify novel drug compounds derived from established drug templates. Proprietary searching techniques are used to interrogate the vast amount of publicly available biological data generating new therapeutic hypotheses. It is the combination of these biological hypotheses with information relating to established drugs and established drug templates, which identifies new uses for these molecules. These initial product concepts are confirmed through pharmacological reprofiling. The established drug is optimised for its new indication using chemical modification or drug delivery. This ensures that maximum patient benefit, intellectual property and product differentiation can be obtained. New uses for drugs that have stalled in development Sosei's aim is to identify new medical uses and unexploited commercial potential in compounds stalled in development. These compounds are secured from other pharmaceutical companies and have stalled for reasons other than serious toxicity. Sosei uses a combination of classical pharmacology and new technologies to re-evaluate these compounds. Through its extensive business development network established with US/EU platform technology companies, Sosei has signed DRP® partnership agreements with 30 biotech companies to date representing leading profiling technologies. Product Discovery Focus In order to fuel its sales and marketing goals for Japan the Group is focused upon the identification of new product opportunities in urology and oncology. In addition, the Group has a core biology driven focus in cytokine mediated mechanisms of disease directed towards inflammation. This focus provides excellent opportunities for identifying new opportunities for existing drugs and drug templates. Conceptual Biology Tools A large, proprietary database of known drugs, known drug templates and stalled development compounds, that have valuable additional biological properties, has been established. The database has been populated using proprietary informatics, innovative conceptual biology (the utility of disparate pieces of biological information that, when used in conjunction with one another, are able to generate new biological hypotheses) and significant pharmacological re-profiling data. Intellectual Property Intellectual property protection is achieved through a combination of new use, chemical modification, delivery and process patents. An estate of over 60 patents and patent applications exists which protect developments in the current portfolio and a range of product concepts which may form the basis of future developments.
